About the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad
Described as "unique and unusual," the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad is a non-profit switching railroad. It was created to provide uniform and impartial rail service to the New Orleans area in the safest, most efficient, and economical way.
Though conceived in the late 1890's, when railroad service in and around New Orleans was congested by the activities of most of the trunk line railroads, the Public Belt Railroad didn't officially begin operation until 1908.
The Public Belt Railroad is unique among the railroads of the United States in that it is a publicly owned and operated terminal switching railroad. It is owned by the citizens of the City of New Orleans and operated through the Public Belt Railroad Commission.
Public Belt interchanges with six Class I Railroads serving the City of New Orleans. In addition, it provides switching and haulage service to some of them. Connections with other railroads provide customers with access to the entire mainland of the United States, as well as Canada and Mexico.
